This unique, high-energy work could be described by the following: imagine Arnold Schoenberg, Henry Mancini, and Charlie Parker walking into a dance club in Havana, and staying for three minutes. Tight Squeeze ventures into new territory as it explores chromaticism and syncopation against a prerecorded percussion groove. The result is the repertoire’s first electroacoustic twelve-tone techno Latin bebop band piece! Okay, maybe Schoenberg did all that first, but it never sounded quite like this!

Western Suite

For Orchestra. Duration:11:30

viewscore

Commissioned by Ivan Shulman and The Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra and premiered by them in Santa Barbara, CA. A warm, colorful, tuneful programmatic piece describing the west where I grew up, Western Suite (aka Montana Morning) is Coplandesque with interesting twists and turns. Numerous professional and community orchestras have performed Montana Morning across the country. Moderate in difficulty, an outstanding trumpet player is needed. Though piece is scored with harp and piano, it has been performed successfully on numerous occasions without one or both.

Mist

For Orchestra. Duration: 16:30 minutes

viewscore

This exciting – and beautiful – new tone poem, written on the Island of Elba in the Mediterranean, where Napoleon was exiled, is meant to evoke a sense of early morning by the sea, which typically is misty there.

Listen to this introduction by Diane Wittry:
.

The piece could be called impressionistic but it is not at all like Debussy’s La Mer, or Sibelius’ Oceanides. Harmonically, it is “centered around diminished chords” and the tritone. There is some aleatoric disruption of timing by the strings. A trumpet is used as “an antagonist,” its “haunting cry” meant to be “a reminder of things unsettled.” The orchestration includes unusual instruments and effects: large and small “rain sticks,” which are hollow and pierced bamboo pieces, water pans with actual falling water, and flutes and trumpets without sounded notes but with the sound of air blown through them, as well as wind chimes. There is a full complement of woodwinds and brass, harp, timpani, glockenspiel and suspended cymbal, in addition to strings.

In Remembrance

For Concert Band. Duration: 12:00

The first movement, “Fanfares To Fallen Heroes”, is a tribute to the brave firemen, policemen and rescue workers who tirelessly and fearlessly risked and sacrificed their lives in order to save the lives of others. The movement is permeated with fanfare motives that reflect both the bravery displayed and the danger that these people faced. The second movement, “Elegy To The Innocent”, is a tribute to all the innocent victims and their loved ones who have suffered at the hands of the terrorists. The outer sections have a dirge-like rhythm underpinning a sorrowful melody. The middle section contrasts the dirge by giving a sense of comfort to all that have suffered. The third movement, “Justice”, represents the struggle and resolve of the United States of America and its allies to eliminate terrorism. Battle motives alternate with a heroic theme throughout the movement. The last movement, “Prayer For Peace”, represents a hope that all the people of the world can achieve the tolerance and understanding we need to live in harmony and in a civilized manner.

Inspired by the study of astronomy and Holst’s “The Planets” orchestral suite, the piece is just over four minutes long divided into four sections that play off of the celestial theme beginning with “Stargazing” and leading up to the final “Explosion.” Each instrument family gets a chance to shine, and the rhythmic energy maintains the excitement throughout.

Spanish Fiesta

For Concert Band. Duration: 9:28

*a CSIC commission

viewscore

The “Spanish Fiesta” for concert band is structured in simple ternary form. Its material pulls from Spanish, South American and American big band jazz traditions. It is South American in that the larger outer A sections feature the samba – the Brazilian dance with its roots in Brazil (Rio De Janeiro) and Africa. It is Spanish in the sense that it features a baritone sax solo over a repetitious malaguena rhythm. The traditional harmonic chord sequence also is typical of traditional Spanish dance.

The Eisenhower Interstate Highway System I – 84

For Concert Band. Duration: 12:00

Eisenhower –  I84

Our interstate system cuts through some of our greatest cities, across the wide expanse of deserts, farmland, along stunning coastlines and through spectacular mountain ranges. It would take a production on the scale of three Wagner’s Ring Cycles to depict all the cool places America’s interstate highways go through. I chose just a few of my favorites and crammed it into 12 minutes.

Four Preludes

For SATB, Strings and Piano. Duration: 7:00

The strings, keyboard and choir are in full partner in this piece inspired by the poem, “Preludes” by T.S. Eliot. The strings in particular execute a number of extended techniques—from sul ponticello and sul tasto, to Bartok pizzicato, natural and artificial harmonics to double and triple stops to thrown bows and expressive glissandi—in an effort to further underline this magnificent text. Over the course of seven minutes, “Four Preludes” attempts to capture the beauty and power of this poetry, from the dramatic opening measures to the quietly expressive conclusion. “An infinitely gentle, infinitely suffering thing…”

Visionary

“Visionary is inspired by the life of Apple co-founder, inventor, and entrepreneur Steve Jobs, who passed away on October 5, 2011. Upon his death, many in the U.S. – including myself – took time to consider the dramatic impact that Jobs’ technological innovations had on our daily lives. While listening to an interview discussing Jobs’ legacy, I was struck by the interviewees description of Jobs’ vision, who explained that Jobs didn’t so much create new technologies, but rather had the uncanny ability to take complex technologies and make them simple.

Flash Mob

For Wind Ensemble. Duration: 7:30

Flash Mob is inspired by the recent trend of large crowd performance art mobilized by social media. In a typical flash mob, participants organized through email, Facebook, or Twitter unsuspectingly converge on a public area and breakout into an unusual or entertaining activity. In 2006, nearly 4000 people silently danced in subway stations throughout London while wearing headphones connected to portable music devices. The first “international flash mob” on record took place in 2008 as thousands of participants in over 25 cities took part in the world’s largest pillow fight. The surreal experiences generated by flash mobs challenge the traditional boundaries between artist and audience and increase social media’s influence on art in the 21st century.

Black Water

For clarinet, piano and computer. Duration: 10:00

viewscore

Inspired by the 2010 BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The water was black and shiny. It was obvious nothing could live there. The oil spill released about 4.9 million barrels, or 185 million gallons of crude oil. It was estimated that 53,000 barrels per day were escaping from the well just before it was capped. The spill has caused extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats as well as the Gulf’s fishing and tourism industries. Skimmer ships, floating containment booms, anchored barriers, sand-filled barricades along shorelines, and dispersants were used in an attempt to protect hundreds of miles of beaches, wetlands, and estuaries from the spreading oil. Scientists have also reported immense underwater plumes of dissolved oil not visible at the surface.

Octarine Spark

For Wind Band. Duration: 7:00

Inspired by the “Discworld” novels by legendary British writer Terry Pratchett. The alternate reality of the magical Discworld has been a companion for generations of readers around the world. “Octarine” is the color of magic and sparks of this color are given off when a magical reaction takes place. Only wizards can see the “octarine” portion of the light spectrum. The renowned composer of PAPER CUT and TIGHT SQUEEZE has created a love child from these two popular and unusual electroacoustic band works, and the result is LIGHTS OUT, an audience-wowing excursion into a new realm of opto-electro-acoustic wind band repertoire that incorporates visual and physical elements. The music engages without staging effects, but you’ll want to give your band the creative fun of devising a performance that will plunge the audience into darkness and surround them with glowing colors —  a very physical approach to bringing band music to life — and, to light!

Composer Nan Avant

Celtic Winds Suite

The Celtic Winds Suite is a musical journey through Ireland and Scotland, countries within the British Isles. I was fortunate to have visited this beautiful region in 2011 and was very inspired with their music, country and lore. The Suite begins with the Ballad of the British Isles, a lyrical piece with an air of Irish music, melodic tones and a lilting tempo that transitions into a minor key and returns to the first motif, finishing with a grand statement. Gaelic March is a full and sonorous march depicting the bravery of the Scottish heritage with rhthmic structure in 6/8 and distinctive melodies. The Celtic Winds Suite is clearly tonal with memorable themes.
