Western Suite

For Orchestra. Duration:11:30

viewscore

Commissioned by Ivan Shulman and The Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra and premiered by them in Santa Barbara, CA. A warm, colorful, tuneful programmatic piece describing the west where I grew up, Western Suite (aka Montana Morning) is Coplandesque with interesting twists and turns. Numerous professional and community orchestras have performed Montana Morning across the country. Moderate in difficulty, an outstanding trumpet player is needed. Though piece is scored with harp and piano, it has been performed successfully on numerous occasions without one or both.

This unique, high-energy work could be described by the following: imagine Arnold Schoenberg, Henry Mancini, and Charlie Parker walking into a dance club in Havana, and staying for three minutes. Tight Squeeze ventures into new territory as it explores chromaticism and syncopation against a prerecorded percussion groove. The result is the repertoire’s first electroacoustic twelve-tone techno Latin bebop band piece! Okay, maybe Schoenberg did all that first, but it never sounded quite like this!

Dos Danzas

For Concert Band. Duration: 9:45

These two energetic Grade 4 dances for concert band were written one-per-part to encourage independence and solos for all players (string bass part is optional). Tangential Tango explores the sultry side of bitonality. Gallo fino employs asymmetrical meters to support both meanings of the term.

Crossings

For Orchestra. Duration: 13 minutes

viewscore

The music is based on a series of motives that are introduced in the opening section. As the piece continues, the musical ideas cross over one another in different ways, thus transforming themselves and their relationship to each other. Like looking through a kaleidoscope the perspective is always changing, but the object remains the same.

Composer Christopher Caliendo

Spanish Fiesta

For Concert Band. Duration: 9:28

*a CSIC commission

viewscore

The “Spanish Fiesta” for concert band is structured in simple ternary form. Its material pulls from Spanish, South American and American big band jazz traditions. It is South American in that the larger outer A sections feature the samba – the Brazilian dance with its roots in Brazil (Rio De Janeiro) and Africa. It is Spanish in the sense that it features a baritone sax solo over a repetitious malaguena rhythm. The traditional harmonic chord sequence also is typical of traditional Spanish dance.

Dreamless Sleep

For Solo Cello. Duration: 6:00

viewscore

This piece for cello solo evokes a nostalgic longing for sleep that remains just out of reach. The title is taken from the poetry of Lord Byron: “The silence of that dreamless sleep, I envy now too much to weep.”

Commissioned by the 2012 ACDA Women’s Choir R&S Commissioning Consortium, the entire piece drives toward the last line of the Stacy Gnall poem “big brother, I am catching up to you.” One long, rhythmic race, this selection will be a wonderful contrast to much of the repertoire often included in women’s choral concerts.

A whirlwind of dance and sound! Three heavily contrasting movements –  polka – incantation and serpent dance – minute waltz contain rare solo opportunities for contrabass, clarinet, tuba and timpani.  Instrumentation includes harp, piano and a ton of percussion. Composer Diane Wittry

Mist

For Orchestra. Duration: 16:30 minutes

viewscore

This exciting – and beautiful – new tone poem, written on the Island of Elba in the Mediterranean, where Napoleon was exiled, is meant to evoke a sense of early morning by the sea, which typically is misty there.

Listen to this introduction by Diane Wittry:
.

The piece could be called impressionistic but it is not at all like Debussy’s La Mer, or Sibelius’ Oceanides. Harmonically, it is “centered around diminished chords” and the tritone. There is some aleatoric disruption of timing by the strings. A trumpet is used as “an antagonist,” its “haunting cry” meant to be “a reminder of things unsettled.” The orchestration includes unusual instruments and effects: large and small “rain sticks,” which are hollow and pierced bamboo pieces, water pans with actual falling water, and flutes and trumpets without sounded notes but with the sound of air blown through them, as well as wind chimes. There is a full complement of woodwinds and brass, harp, timpani, glockenspiel and suspended cymbal, in addition to strings.

Composer Geoffrey Gordon

Four Preludes

For SATB, Strings and Piano. Duration: 7:00

*a CSIC commission

viewscore

The strings, keyboard and choir are in full partner in this piece inspired by the poem, “Preludes” by T.S. Eliot. The strings in particular execute a number of extended techniques—from sul ponticello and sul tasto, to Bartok pizzicato, natural and artificial harmonics to double and triple stops to thrown bows and expressive glissandi—in an effort to further underline this magnificent text. Over the course of seven minutes, “Four Preludes” attempts to capture the beauty and power of this poetry, from the dramatic opening measures to the quietly expressive conclusion. “An infinitely gentle, infinitely suffering thing…”

Composer Ian Dicke

Flash Mob

For Wind Ensemble. Duration: 7:30

Flash Mob is inspired by the recent trend of large crowd performance art mobilized by social media. In a typical flash mob, participants organized through email, Facebook, or Twitter unsuspectingly converge on a public area and breakout into an unusual or entertaining activity. In 2006, nearly 4000 people silently danced in subway stations throughout London while wearing headphones connected to portable music devices. The first “international flash mob” on record took place in 2008 as thousands of participants in over 25 cities took part in the world’s largest pillow fight. The surreal experiences generated by flash mobs challenge the traditional boundaries between artist and audience and increase social media’s influence on art in the 21st century.

Harvey Milk a Cantata

For SATB and Piano. Duration: 19:00

viewscore

Susan Goldstein, City Archivist of San Francisco, gave Conductor and Artistic Director William Sauerland full access to Milk’s original papers, which yielded texts that have never been published before. Sauerland’s research was assisted by Tim Wilson, the archivist of the Harvey Milk collection. Texts were compiled and edited by Sauerland and composer Jack Curtis Dubowsky. The final cantata text is entirely by Milk, culled from both well-known speeches as well as rare documents. The Estate of Harvey Milk granted special permission for the use of these texts.

I Will Lift Mine Eyes

For SATB. Duration: 4:00

Finding peace in the splendor of the natural world, Mr. Runestad captured that serenity with this work. He carefully shaped the melodic lines to mimic that of a mountainous landscape and the tone colors to the bold hues of where the hills meet the sky.

Composer James David

Octarine Spark

For Wind Band. Duration: 7:00

viewscore

Inspired by the “Discworld” novels by legendary British writer Terry Pratchett. The alternate reality of the magical Discworld has been a companion for generations of readers around the world. “Octarine” is the color of magic and sparks of this color are given off when a magical reaction takes place. Only wizards can see the “octarine” portion of the light spectrum. Through a musical pun, much of the pitch material is based on an ascending natural scale which contains eight notes (including the octave!).

Composer Jim Colonna

Dancing Day

For Concert Band. Duration: 4:40

viewscore

This celebratory work for symphonic band was commissioned in honor of the retirement of John Endahl, long-time director of the Lansing Concert Band (Lansing, Michigan). The driving dance movement occurs from the very opening measures through to the end. An extraordinary array of sonorities are explored throughout giving us a contemporary yet highly enjoyable piece of symphonic band repertoire.
