Composers and Schools in Concert (CSIC) supports youth music education by connecting professional composers with high school music ensembles throughout the United States. CSIC provides high school students with an educational opportunity in the professional field of music composition through composer commissions, composer workshops and a contemporary score library for young performers.
Our aim is to make it easy for youth music educators to commission a composer or bring a composer into the classroom for a composer workshop. We also maintain a catalog of contemporary scores for young performers which provides educators with a centralized resource of high-quality scores outside the standard youth music repertoire.
Our 3 Programs
In our Commissions in Concert program, CSIC commissions a professional composer to write a piece in collaboration with a youth ensemble (grades 8 – 12), and the student ensemble performs the world premiere. The composer spends a minimum of three class periods creating and rehearsing with the students. The composer joins the ensemble at the performance of the world premiere, and all ticket-sale revenue goes back to the youth music program.
Through hands-on learning, in-person rehearsals, and the creation of a piece written specifically for them, students are introduced to an alternative way of experiencing the creation and performance of new music.
For most young students, the composer may be the most remote figure in the musical process. By bringing a professional composer into the classroom — for a 2-hour, 3-period or 8-period workshop — CSIC strives to deepen the students’ overall relationship to music and encourage students to create. CSIC Composition Workshops for beginner to advanced level, provide an opportunity for students to explore the creation of music under the guidance of a professional composer through a wide variety of workshops covering music genres such as Classical, Jazz, Experimental, World, Electronics/Instrument-Building, Songwriting, Scoring and Sound Design for Film, Television, and Games, Cross-Disciplinary instruction and Improvisation.
A Contemporary Score Library for Young Performers
The CSIC Score Library is an online catalog of contemporary scores geared toward young performers. The Score Library provides educators a centralized resource of high-quality scores outside the standard youth music repertoire. Our aim is to promote awareness of contemporary music and help educators easily locate contemporary pieces for their ensembles to perform. The CSIC Score Library is a searchable directory of scores of music created by contemporary composers — including those commissioned by CSIC — that are particularly suited, yet challenging and innovative, for youth ensembles.
